The latest trend to hit your Instagram feed — coffee with added mushrooms — may seem odd, but it is not without merit. Known as adaptogenic mushroom coffee, this new beverage combines caffeine with various medicinal mushrooms (such as chaga, lion’s mane and cordyceps) to boost energy and relieve stress. The mushrooms are referred to as “adaptogens,” which help balance and strengthen the body’s immunity. As a dietitian, I’ve seen firsthand how a cup of this brew can ease anxiety, improve focus and enhance sleep quality.

Mushroom Coffee: Where to Find It in Stores

Mushroom coffee is typically available as an instant coffee powder to mix with hot water. Some brands also add other ingredients like powdered creamer, superfoods and sweeteners, as well as herbs such as ashwagandha. Although adaptogenic herbs have less research behind them, they’re thought to provide similar stress relief and energy-boosting benefits as mushrooms.

In addition to adaptogens, the mushrooms in these blends also contain polysaccharides and carotenoids. These plant compounds can support the growth of good bacteria in your digestive system, helping to maintain a healthy gut. They’re also high in antioxidants, which can protect your cells from damage and reduce inflammation. Some mushroom coffee brands are marketed as low-FODMAP, which can ease digestive symptoms such as bloating in individuals with IBS.
